2 25일 쇼트트랙 여자 3,000m 계주 결승전.

"슉슉쇽쇽" 한국의 마지막 주자 김민정이 중국 선수의 안쪽을 파고들며 선두로 나섰다. 이 과정에서 김민정선수의 오른손이 중국 선수의 몸에 닿았다. 중국 선수가 살짝 휘청하는 사이 김민정 선수는 앞으로 치고 나갔고, 독주 끝에 1위로 결승선을 통과했다.

 

또 한 번 역전의 드라마가 완성되는 듯했다. 하지만, 기쁨도 잠시, 심판진은 한국이 중국선수를 밀었다며 실격 판정을 내렸다. (impeding 선언)

 

핵심은 김민정선수가 코너에서 추월하는 과정에서 팔의 움직임에 중국선수의 진로를 방해하려는 고의성이 있었느냐이다.

 

"진로방해 의도"

의도는 비디오 판독으로 알아내기 어렵다. 심판의 주관이 크게 작용할 수밖에 없다. 객관화하는 방법이 없을까. 김민정선수의 팔 동작이 고의적 방해가 아니라 자연스러운 스케이팅 과정이었다는 것을 어떻게 증명할까.

 

방법이 있다.

쇼트트랙 선수들은 헬멧을 쓴다. 뇌파 센서를 헬멧에 부착하면 된다. 실시간으로 모든 선수의 뇌파를 1,000분의 1초 단위로 측정하고, 무선으로 송신한다. 선수들의 경기력에는 영향을 미치지 않는다. 수집된 뇌파 정보를 분석해서, 순간순간 선수들의 긴장상태, 집중 정도, 운동궤적의 방향설정 의도를 실시간으로 파악할 수 있다. 좀 더 공정한 경기가 가능해진다.

 

Praamstra 의 논문에 의하면 의도적 행동을 할 때 두정엽(parietal)에서 전두엽(frontal)으로 뇌 활성이 순차적으로 발생한다 (Praamstra et al. 2005). 행동 의도가 어느 방향으로 발생하느냐에 따라 순차적인 뇌 활성의 진행방향이 왼쪽, 오른쪽으로 바뀐다. 뇌활성의 시공간적 정보를 이용해 선수가 몸을 움직이는 방향에 대한 집중도와 의도를 실시간으로 파악할 수 있게 되는 것이다. 움직임의 의도 추적 시스템이다.

 

가까운 미래 올림픽에서 이런 해설을 듣게 되길 바란다.

Kyongsik Yun is a Ph.D. candidate in the Brain Dynamics Lab, Department of Bio and Brain Engineering at KAIST. The aim of his work is to understand the fundamental mechanisms underpinning the information processing of high level cognitive decision making and to elucidate the pathophysiology of various neuropsychiatric disorders including drug addiction, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's disease.
Kyongsik earned a BA degree in bio and brain engineering from KAIST in 2006.

길이 끝날 즈음 인터뷰를 했다. 아마도 올레길 홍보자료를 만드려는 것 같았다.
추워서 콧물이 나왔다.
진부한 인터뷰는 하지 말아야겠다고 생각했다.
인터뷰에 적절한 좋은 말을 해야 한다고 머리로는 생각했지만, 입으로는 엉뚱한 말이 나왔다.

"음... 오는 길에 말똥이 너무 많았어요. 걸을 때는 바닥만 보고 걸어야 했구요. 중간에 선물태그가 숨겨져 있다는데 앞에 가는 사람들이 다 가져가서 뒤에 가는 사람들은 하나도 못찾았어요ㅠ 일등만 선물 받는 더러운 세상이에요." (난 진심이었다)

(답답하다는 듯이) "그런 거 말고 좋은 말 좀 해주세요"

너무 추웠다.
나는 결국 '일상을 탈출해, 자연을 느끼며 즐겁고 상쾌했다' 고 대답했다.
나는 왜 사람들이 진부한 인터뷰를 하게 되는지 알았다.
